Your middle and high schoolers can start learning Generative AI—today, including standard Interactive GenAI Learning as well as advanced Build Your Own GenAI experiences. All Courses align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

No adult expertise required, with flexible delivery options including live virtual and in-person at low cost.  After School Education and Safety (ASES), Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) or STEM camps. Thanks to a State of California grant,  free video-based courses are available through Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County maintains several CalSTEM Generative AI courses. Any California student, classroom, school or district can learn GenAI at no cost today—or email make@calstem.org for live virtual or in-person options. Examples of our GenAI courses here: Prompt Engineering, Large Language Models, Small Language Models.

For the third year in a row, the California Department of Education featured CalSTEM at the statewide 2025 STEAM Symposium. Teachers and administrators learned about our offerings. We are so grateful for the many who we met in previous years and then helped us understand how to tailor our offerings to school districts and county education offices!

Our Generative AI learning courses, uniquely “using AI to teach AI” with “students guiding students,” enable middle and high school students to learn the most important skill for tomorrow’s economy. Prompt Engineering and Large Language Models are changing the world—and users use natural language instead of code. As coders and former coding instructors, we know that learning how GenAI works is actually way more valuable than learning how to code. We love getting in the classroom with students!

Progress on our mission--to enable every California middle and high school student to learn Generative AI—accelerated with support from California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who oversees the Department of Education. Grant funding from CDE enables CalSTEM to publish many GenAI courses for free in partnership with Los Angeles County.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills, including generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), are the most valuable skills students can learn for the economy of tomorrow. STEM careers earn an average of 60% more!

However, National Science Foundation (NSF) research shows 30% underrepresentation of people from low-income communities. In contrast, students in well-resourced communities usually have plenty of funding and adult expertise—many even have have corporate sponsors.

However, under-resourced communities in low income areas often lack these vital STEM programs because of high costs and lack of specialized expertise. Our partnership with Los Angeles County and California Department of Education helps to close that gap by enabling any student to learn generative AI for free.

CalSTEM.org’s mission is to close the STEM skills gap in low-income schools and under-resourced communities.

CalSTEM.org does this by offering no-cost video based training, as well as live virtual and in-person learning for Generative AI, uniquely having students instructing students who actually use AI to learn AI. Say goodbye to boring content that quickly loses student attention.

While Generative AI is rapidly and dramatically changing the world of software, learning about hardware is excellent for careers in physical engineering like mechanical and electrical engineering. Along with Generative AI, CalSTEM maintains a long-time partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and their underwater robotics program so middle and high school students can learn valuable engineering skills.

CalSTEM.org’s Robotics Program uses kits from the National Science Foundation (NSF), in partnership with the State of California Department of Education. Learn more here

CalSTEM.org leverages the Generative AI platform of Microsoft Azure, and various large language models from OpenAI, along with student-friendly user interface of Zammo.ai for both levels of GenAI learning:

1) standard Interactive Learning using AI to teach AI, and

2) advanced Build Your Own GenAI Experiences

CalSTEM Mentors pairs students from under-resourced communities with STEM college students and professionals—who have similar backgrounds as the students—to help inspire the next generation of STEM students.

Students and Teams can also advance to more challenging levels of these programs, and also compete in the same regional and international competitions as the founders of CalSTEM.org
